More about the Music

Branford High School Concert Choir

Branford High School Concert Choir is a mixed choir of sophomores, juniors and seniors. They have been performing for over 40 years, improving the quality of their music with each passing year. The ensemble is predominantly student-led. Section leaders teach the music and choir officers assist in planning events.

Their goal is to encourage students to be self-sufficient learners, while emphasizing the importance of viewing things from a different perspective. This core belief is reflected in their diverse music selections and teaching philosophy, which is valued and employed by their director, Mike Martone Jr. They explore how music plays various roles in different cultures, while diving into the origins of each song. They hope to share their love of music by telling a story through song and inspiring communities with each performance.

Singer/Songwriter Showcase: Phoebe Merrill

Phoebe Merrill is a singer songwriter whose thoughtful lyrics reflect the stories of her own life and imagined ones. Phoebe is a gifted and multi-talented young artist who sings, plays guitar, and writes music that has its heart in the traditions of indie folk music. Think: wanderlust, romanticism, and a soulful introspection. Her songs are storytelling and dreamtelling punctuated by a melancholy yodel and an enchanted whisper with the spirit of an old soul.

Phoebe, a Connecticut native, has studied voice under Phoebe Madden for over five years, and studied guitar with Becky Kessler of the band Violent Mae. She is currently recording an album at Silk Music Factory.

Singer/Songwriter Spotlight: Bob Crelin

2024 marks 50 years as a songwriter for Branford native, Bob Crelin. Bob’s songs are reflections on life, love and our changing world – imbued with catchy melodies, rocking rhythms, and poetic style.

Growing up during the explosion of modern pop music, Bob’s love of ‘hit’ songs began with The Beatles arriving in the U.S. on the Ed Sullivan Show. He grew to appreciate the incredible power of popular music to profoundly touch us all. Bob has found influences in all genres, and drawn inspiration from artists like Todd Rundgren, Dar Williams, and David Bowie.

Bob performed and recorded with a handful of local bands in the 1970s-80s, and enjoyed local radio airplay with Branford’s own, Rival. In the 1990s, songs he co-wrote with his band, Catwalk, found their way to major market rock radio and college stations, with feature articles in Billboard Magazine and The New York Times.

As a solo artist, Bob Crelin, also known as BC, has opened shows for Marshall Crenshaw, blues guitarist Sue Foley, and Jon Herrington of Steely Dan. He continues to perform live, write, and record new material.
